Final Fantasy VII Remake: Cloud Will Be Much More Awkward This Time Around

It looks like we’ll soon be seeing a much more awkward Cloud Strife thanks to the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake. For those that remember the original game, Cloud was basically the essence of cool, whether it be handing Tifa (or Marlene) a flower back in 7th Heaven or jumping onto a Shinra train to evade Shinra soldiers. While he still may be doing these things in the remake, it appears that overall the character will be a lot more cringey this time around.

Speaking in a recent Inside Final Fantasy VII Remake documentary video, story writer Kazushige Nojima – a returning developer from the original game – reveals that the remake has enabled him to add a significant more depth to Cloud’s personality. “For this game I have gone much deeper into the inner psychology of Cloud, the main character,” Nojima said. In the original I depicted him as a cool and stylish character. However, this time, he can miss the mark and be a little cringe-worthy at times.”

His cool facade can often slip. Because he wants people to accept him and respect him, he puts on a front. So, when he doesn’t know something he just goes ‘Not interested’. I have written him in a way that makes you think that ‘Not interested’ might not be a cool thing to say, but can sometimes be a bit lame.”

Of course, there isn’t a whole lot of certainty to whether or not fans will take to the ‘new’ Cloud Strife. “I am nervous about whether the fans will accept that or not,” Nojima admitted. Elsewhere in the video, Final Fantasy VII Remake co-director Motomu Toriyama revealed that the game would delve deeper into Aerith’s backstory. “In Remake we actually reveal quite a major untold part of [Aerith’s] past,” he says. “You might not even catch it at all.”

Thankfully, we’re less than two weeks away from the official release date for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, so it won’t be much longer before we get to see Cloud tripping over his own tongue while he chats with the ladies of FF7R.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is slated to release on April 10, 2020 exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
