Fallout 76: Here's How to Unlock Your Framerate

With the release date of Fallout 76 rapidly approaching, fans looking forward to Bethesda’s latest entry in their popular series have been preparing themselves for what promises to be a wild ride through West Virginia. While the upcoming console versions of the game are fairly static as far as max framerate goes, PC players can actually exceed these limitations by doing a few tweaks within the game’s file system, which should aid those with souped up PC’s in getting the absolute most out of their systems. So, without further ado, here’s how to remove the framerate cap for the PC version of Fallout 76.

Once you’ve run the game once and gone through and tweaked your settings, exit the game and open up Windows Explorer. Head to the ‘Documents\My Games\Fallout 76’ folder and open the file named Fallout76Prefs.ini. This file is where most of the game’s settings are stored, as well as a few ones that are inaccessible through the settings. Do a quick search and find ‘iPresentInterval’ and, if the line isn’t there, add it in verbatim under the [Display] header. Either way, simply change the line to ‘iPresentInterval=0’ to disable vsync and effectively remove the game’s framerate limiter.

There is a mess-free alternative to this for those that have an Nvidia GPU. Opening up the Nvidia control panel will allow users to disable vsync, which could potentially work instead of messing with the game’s .ini file. This admittedly is not a sure-fire way of removing the framerate limiter, only a potential alternative.

There are a few things to note when removing the framerate limiter. Some of Bethesda’s previous games have had connections between the framerate and the game’s internal settings, which could mean that Fallout 76 may run a bit strangely at high framerates. This would normally be fine in single player games as nobody else’s experiences are being tampered with, but since Fallout 76 is a multiplayer game, this could be considered speed hacking, so keep that in mind.

It is very possible that Bethesda will implement some other form of an FPS cap or prevent the INI file from being edited in the future, but for now, those looking to test out the Fallout 76 beta test can play without a framerate cap by following the above instructions.

Fallout 76 launches for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 14, 2018.
