Eminem Samples Song From ‘Kingdom Hearts’ On Latest Album

Eminem Kamikaze Album

Last Friday, the internet collectively obsessed over the latest album to be released by the wordsmith from 8 Mile, Eminem. Aside from the expected lyrical prowess and scathing diss references towards popular celebrity figures, a lot of big publicity came from Eminem’s acknowledgment of geek culture. His new single Venom is specifically made for the new major motion picture based on the popular Spider-Man villain.

However, it seems another song on the album nonchalantly paid tribute to another nerd favorite pastime, video games. The producer of the Eminem ‘Kamikaze’ album has confirmed the usage of a Kingdom Hearts song as a sample on the album.

Rolling Stone recently published an extensive interview with Illadaproducer, who worked as a producer on several tracks on the new Eminem album. The producer, whose real name is Illya Fraser, provided insight about how the tracks he assisted with came together. The most interesting answers were in regards to tracks that sampled previously existing music, and where they came from. “Good Guy” (feat. Jessie Reyes) stood out to many with its familiar sounding backing vocals, and Fraser confirmed the sample’s origins for those that guessed correctly.

“That’s me doing my video game thing,” he said. “Kingdom Hearts. It’s a Japanese video game, and that’s the theme song from it. It’s one of the dopest melodies I’ve ever heard. Shout out Japanese video games and Japanimation for inspiration. Filtered it, did some chops, did some processing to it. I basically made it unrecognizable, but I know they would have still found it. That’s why we had to deal with the clearance. But when I do anything I try to make it to where it’s not fully recognizable.”

The song he appeared to utilize was Utada Hikaru’s “Simple and Clean,” which served not only as the song accompanying the intro and ending FMV sequences of the first Kingdom Hearts game, but the melody of which was also heavily present in the game’s orchestral soundtrack. Utada’s vocals were used by Illya, but as he stated, they were intricately edited to sound much differently from the original cut of the song.

Many likely missed this subtle inclusion, but Fraser couldn’t keep the secret locked in Kingdom Hearts for too long. Now, let’s hope that Eminem makes it into Kingdom Hearts III as a summon or boss battle. With his signature hood, he already looks like an Organization XIII member.
