Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr Trailer Highlights New Necromancer Class (VIDEO)

The Elder Scrolls Online is preparing to ring in the Season of the Dragon for its upcoming Elsweyr expansion, the update not only bringing forth the flying might of dragons but also the new dead-manipulating Necromancer class. Those aiming to take part in dark arts and command the forces of the dead are in luck, as a new trailer highlights some of the abilities Necromancers will have to offer.

As per the trailer’s description, “The souls and corpses of the fallen are yours to command with the Necromancer, an all-new class coming with The Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr. Raise relentless undead, encase yourself in impenetrable bone, and weave severed flesh back together with the power of Tamriel’s dark arts. With the Necromancer, death itself is a weapon, and you are its master.” Check out the trailer below.

Necromancers were further expanded on in a recent blog post, where the game’s devs explained the class’s death-defying lore as well as its place within the rest of the open-world game. “In broad strokes, necromancy is about the creative manipulation of the soul, or animus, which is one of the basic building blocks of life in Tamriel,” explains Leamon Tuttle, ESO’s Loremaster. “Necromancers use their power to cast spells, bind souls into service, and use lesser Daedric spirits to reanimate corpses.”

Even with such power at a player’s disposal, Necromancy is still a disruption of nature at the end of the day. Therefore these deathly abilities earn a fair amount of side-eye and hostility from the Tamriel public, as explained by Lead Content Designer in charge of the Necromancer class Ed Stark. “Historically, necromancy has always been frowned-upon by Tamrielic society, and so, when some NPCs see an overtly necromantic act, they react with fear or aggression and report it for the crime it is.”

“A player who chooses to assume the role of a necromancer in ESO needs to understand that they’re playing something of an outlaw class,” says Stark. “It’s similar to a player who decided to engage in wholesale crime—they’re taking on a bit of an increased risk in exchange for increased excitement.”

The Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr arrives for Mac, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on June 4th.
