Early Look at the Top Secret Stranger Things Season 2

Stranger Things

Stranger Things season 2 is coming after the first season made it’s debut last July and people became instantly obsessed with the show. Set in a small town in Indiana in the 80’s, it follows a group of kids (and a few adults) as they deal with an inter-dimensional portal that opens up and claims one of their friends. The show was a huge success and won a SAG Award for best ensemble in a drama series. The young stars suddenly became ultra famous and were shocked by the response and attention they were starting to receive from fans, especially Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the mysterious super powered girl named Eleven.

I went to Manila last year; there were people camping outside the hotel, crying and literally hyperventilating. I was like, ‘Why do you like me so much? I’m just boring old Millie.'”

Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin, said that he likes to joke with the creators and ask them why they couldn’t have made the first season just “okay”. He says they never expected that Stranger Things would be so successful. With the show returning for Halloween, people are really hoping that the second season will live up to the first and the twin brother creators, Ross and Matt Duffer, are confident that they have made a “worthy successor”

It’s a balance of the comfort you’re familiar with but then taking it in new directions. That’s what we’re trying to strike with season 2.”

They have been working very hard to keep this season under wraps, even going as far as to ask the producers of Game of Thrones for security protocol tips. The Duffers started writing Stranger Things season 2 as soon as the first was released. Originally, the brothers talked about the next season having jumped ahead in time with older versions of the main characters, but decided against it, because of their love for the kids. By August of last year, too much speculation had began and Netflix decided to announce a sequel. Instead, the Duffers decided to release some chapter titles like “Mad Max” and “The Pumpkin Patch”, but fans dug too deep into them. According to Matt Duffer:

Some of them are changing. Some of the chapter titles we didn’t put out because these people are smart on the f***ing internet. You’ve seen it with Westworld – they figured it out! I’ve seen videos analyzing the chapter titles, and they’re right on a lot.”

Thanks to these f***king smart people on the internet, the security has been boosted but thanks to EW, we get a few small details about Stranger Things season 2. The season begins a year later on Halloween and Will, who has returned to his life after being stranded in the upside down, isn’t adjusting well. He sees things from the upside down and has no idea if they are real or if he’s hallucinating. His mom Joyce (Winona Ryder) is dating an old high school friend (Sean Astin) and trying to give her sons more stability in their lives after everything that happened. Meanwhile, the Chief of Police, Hopper, is trying to cover up things like Barb’s disappearance in order to protect everyone.

Mike and Nancy are mourning the apparent deaths of their friends Eleven and Barb, but they aren’t going to be the only brother sister duo anymore. Max (Sadie Sink) becomes friends with the boys and even attracts romantic interest from Lucas and Dustin, but her brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery) isn’t good at making friends. Matt Duffer says that he will represent the evil we see in the real world as compared to the supernatural evil of the upside down. The rift to the upside down is still open and even though they won’t say what kind of monsters we’ll see, Matt says they will be exploring “different kinds of horror. It’s not all scary though, Dustin gets himself a new pet like a polliwog from the other dimension to bond with.

Of course, the most important question is… Where does Eleven fit in to this season? In the season 1 finale, she seems to have died after defeating the Demogorgon, but then later, we see Hopper dropping off her favorite snack of Eggos. They say that Eleven is back, but refuse to give any information about her story line. The actress even has a code name on set. The Duffers do say that this season will delve more into her past:

We do get into her story and backstory. We learn about where she came from and how she came into the world and the program that resulted in her.”

The creators also say that they plan to wrap the show after 4 or 5 seasons. Matt says that he wants the show to have a “finite” ending and to not be one of those shows that “runs out of gas”.
