Design Documents for Cyberpunk 2077 Held for Ransom, CD Projekt Red Responds

Cyberpunk 2077, the highly anticipated game title from CD Projekt Red since The Witcher series, was recently infiltrated which resulted in design documents from their studio being held at ransom. It’s unclear how many individuals were involved, whether this was an inside job, or if the company was hacked from an external group. The fact of the matter is the group threatening the studio stated that if they were to not comply, the files would be released to the public. Via Twitter, the developer shared more insight on the thought process which has taken them to this point and formally addressed the situation. It looks as though CD Projekt Red has the high ground:

The documents are old and largely unrepresentative of the current vision for the game. Still, if you’re looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077, it would be best for you to avoid any information not coming directly from CD Projekt Red.”

Even though the files are dated and the developers don’t seem to be in disarray because of their circumstances, it’s still unfortunate that studios must defend their projects like this. In fact, even though they have opened up about the incident, it is likely that the Cyberpunk 2077 designs will still be leaked. This isn’t the first incident, nor will it be the last, of hacking in the entertainment industry. Recently, a group of hackers who go by the name TheDarkOverlord released season 5 of Orange is the New Black when Netflix refused to acknowledge their negotiation attempts and threats. It turned out that the quality of the videos, aside from the first one, were too low to enjoy. Sometimes these situations have a silver lining, but both sides face losses.

What do you think about The Witcher studio’s situation? Do you think they approached it properly? What do you think the consequences for the people who threatened the developer? Feel free to leave any thoughts or comments in the section below or begin a conversation on Don’t Feed the Gamers official Facebook and Twitter!
