DFTG Recaps The Week’s Biggest Movie/TV Trailers: April 4th

A new week means there’s plenty of new trailers to discover from the realm of movies and TV. April 4th presents a number of original adventures, with highlights being the foreboding The House with a Clock in Its Walls, the hallucinogenic anime Lu Over the Wall, and the much-hyped second season of HBO’s Westworld. DFTG recaps the biggest TV and movie trailers of the week in the list below.

The Darkest Minds

The Darkest Minds takes place in a future that sees an entire generation of children endowed with superpowered abilities. From the looks of the trailer, it seems to combine the teen revolution of The Hunger Games with the X-Men, but this time without all that Marvel comic book baggage. The film portrays a quite literal power struggle between the old guard and the new generation, a concept that runs uncannily parallel to the current-day political climate. Perhaps we’ll see this allegory play out further when The Darkest Minds releases in theaters August 3rd.

The House With A Clock In Its Walls

A new film that looks as sinister as it does magical is the ludicrously-named The House with a Clock in Its Walls, starring Jack Black in yet another well-suited, over-the-top role. The trailer presents no shortage of strangeness as it teases the foreboding, clock-filled adventure to come. With long-tenured horror director Eli Roth at the helm, scares are almost surely in the cards, adding plenty of peculiar fun from writer/Supernatural creator Eric Kripke. The House with a Clock in Its Walls completes its countdown into theaters on September 21st.

Lu Over The Wall

Known for a distinctly chaotic animation style, director Masaaki Yuasa returns from his work on the gloriously violent Devilman Crybaby to bring fans another surreal anime with Lu Over the Wall. At first glance, the film’s trailer comparably resembles Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo, but the actual outrageous and colorful mermaid story soon hits viewers with a splash of hypnotic irreverence. Having already hit Japanese theaters last year, Lu Over the Wall releases for US audiences on May 11th.

Terminal

Actress Margot Robbie has shown oodles of ability portraying unhinged characters, none more notable than Suicide Squad‘s Harley Quinn. The crazy comes back in the upcoming Terminal, which follows two hitmen on a pricey murder mission, to which Robbie proceeds to confront with increasingly elaborate disguises and sinister glee. This being a dark, mystery-based film, not much is available about the plot or how supporting actors Simon Pegg and Mike Myers fit into everything, but that’s likely being saved for Terminal‘s release on May 11th.

Westworld – Season 2

Those who have become fans of HBO’s Westworld know how equal-parts philosophical and violent the series can be, especially since the first season’s finale presented a fair share of both back in 2016. A new trailer for the approaching sophomore season teases plenty more where that came from, with an ensuing robot revolt and a look at the new feudal Japan world (Eastworld?) to the anachronistic tune of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box”. Season 2 of Westworld premieres on HBO April 22nd.
