DDoS Attack This Morning: Cyber Attacks on Netflix, Spotify, Twitter

This morning, reports came in that a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack took down a multitude of popular websites. Netflix, Spotify, Tumblr, Reddit, Amazon and Twitter were all affected by the attack, and hundreds of users have reported in that they were unable to access these sites for the past several hours.

According to Internet Performance company, Dyn, the attack was recognized early, at approximately 7:10am and confirmed that the attack was mostly confined to the East Coast, though the hack has impacted a lot of Internet users across the country. Dyn, a domain name system host that monitors and reroutes internet traffic, has been working diligently to rectify the problem, but posted recently that they’re still facing trouble in getting our favorite sites back up:

“Update – Our engineers continue to investigate and mitigate several attacks aimed against the Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure.
Oct 21, 17:53 UTC”

It appears that there have been two waves of this attack, the first having been resolved around 9:30am, before the second wave took down the sites once again. As of right now, Dyn has not given a time frame in which to expect the attack finally over, so be prepared to experience trouble when accessing these websites for the foreseeable future.
