David Ayer Praises Netflix at SDCC 2017 – Bright “Ain’t No Bullshit PG-13 Studio Movie” (VIDEO)
The fantasy/action movie Bright got its first full-length trailer at San Diego Comic-Con where director David Ayer and star Will Smith personally introduced it. Ayer greeted the crowd before the trailer, “What’s up Hall H? This is Netflix’s house. Check this shit out”, while Smith passed out high fives to the cast. This marks the first film presentation from Netflix at SDCC and we’ve got it below:
Max Landis, the screenwriter of Chronicle, wrote the new film and it looks magically delicious. Bright follows two cops who happen to be a human (Will Smith) and an orc (Joel Edgerton) in a world where fantasy creatures and humans live together, but not always in harmony. The partners get mixed up trying to save a magical wand while avoiding criminals, normal and magical alike, as well as the law.
Smith joked, “It was really great to be an African-American police officer who found someone to be racist against”, but all kidding aside, he believes that the story inspired by social issues is “a beautiful snapshot of our world, without hammering it too much.” Edgerton on the other hand was just concerned that no one in LA thought it was strange to see an orc driving a car around. Well, at least not when all they seem to notice is Will Smith. “Nobody cared that a monster was driving a car in L.A.. Everyone was like, ‘Will! Hey, Will,” he said.
Ayer spoke very highly of Netflix, stating “This ain’t no bullshit PG-13 studio movie. I was able to do my shit. I was able to do my thing. Netflix is going to pull a lot of talent because they are so supportive.” Smith agreed and said that Netflix gives filmmakers more freedom:
Netflix can make a hard rated R film for $170 million. Studios can’t do that if the executive wants to be at work on Monday. When you make a movie that expensive you have to broaden the audience which means you have to be PG-13.”
Bright is set to release on Netflix December 22nd. What did you think of the trailer? Are you excited to watch it?
