Call of Duty fans are used to the franchise jumping around to various points in time, especially considering that there are a few studios that the entries rotate through. That said, recent reports are stating that the next installment could be seeing a return to the WWII setting with Sledgehammer Games taking lead.

According to the report from Modern Warzone (via Eurogamer), this year’s Call of Duty will be set during WWII and it is being developed by Sledgehammer Games. The studio was meant to develop last year’s installment, but that was handed over to Treyarch and Raven Software. Of course, it would make sense for Sledgehammer to return to WWII as their last entry in the series was 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII.

What’s interesting about the report is that the title is currently running with the codename Call of Duty WWII: Vanguard, which is also possibly the final name for the game, according to Eurogamer. There are conflicting reports about the setting, with some pointing to an alternate reality where 1945 didn’t mark the end of WWII, while others are claiming Vanguard will feature a WWII based in reality. Either way, it will be interesting to see exactly who is correct.

Of course, this isn’t the first time something in the Call of Duty series has leaked, but it is always best to keep the salt nearby in the event that none of it is factual. If there is one thing fans can probably bet on, however, it is that we will likely learn what the 2021 entry is in July/August, receive it in October/November, and it will probably be tied to Warzone in one way or another.
