Blizzard Founder Assures PC Support Following Diablo Immortal
Though there’s been plenty of speculation regarding the Diablo franchise as of late, one thing we can be certain lies in the future is a mobile spin-off by the name of Diablo Immortal. Blizzard revealed the on-the-go incarnation at last year’s BlizzCon to a decidedly mixed reception, a result largely due to the announcement’s seeming snub of Diablo’s homegrown PC audience.
Though it’s been a while since Diablo Immortal received a new update, former Blizzard boss and co-founder Mike Morhaime recently spoke about the game at Barcelona’s Gamelab Conference (via Eurogamer), addressing fan expectations over a new Diablo game for PC. “It’s sort of like when you have a group that’s really passionate about a franchise like Diablo, really excited about a project that hasn’t been announced,” Morhaime recalled. “Blizzard tried to manage expectations that they weren’t going to announce Diablo 4 at Blizzcon, but I’m not sure that got through.”
As there was considerable hype for Diablo 4 heading into BlizzCon 2018, some fans were let down when a fourth entry not only failed to materialize, but a mobile-driven spin-off was revealed in its place. Blizzard has since attempted to assure fans that numerous projects are in the works starring the Lord of Terror, but such efforts may not have appropriately addressed PC users’ concerns with the future of the Diablo franchise. Morhaime, at the very least, agreed with this sentiment.
Most of the audience did not get that memo. Maybe there should have been more discussion around: Blizzard is not abandoning the PC.”
Though the flames have certainly died down in recent months, it’s likely a safe bet Diablo Immortal won’t be let off the hook anytime soon, despite the potential positives the project may possess. Perhaps BlizzCon 2019 in November could answer fans’ call for a new Diablo game on PC, but this edition of the annual convention predictably might not inspire too much hype.
Diablo Immortal is planned to release for Android and iOS.
