AAA PlayStation Titles "Too Big To Fail," Says Sony Boss

Sony has presented an incredible PlayStation lineup for the foreseeable future, and the console seems to be an unstoppable machine. The company has been doing quite well as their major exclusive titles continue to grow, making it difficult for Xbox to keep up with library choices. Naturally, Sony is the first to recognize how well they’re doing making the claim that their titles are “too big to fail.”

According to Sony Boss Shuhei Yoshida in an interview with MCVUK, the industry has seen major growth in the past few years with AAA space for the PlayStation 4. Sony has put in a lot of hard work growing that industry with exclusives like Death Stranding, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Spider-Man along with many more. Here is what the Sony boss had to say about AAA titles:

On one hand, in the triple-A space, the scale and the tech of game development has grown so much that I feel like we are making a huge bet every time we start a new project. The end results are, when successfully executed, an amazing fusion of art and tech, providing hours and hours of highly engaging interactive entertainment in a big, often open, world to explore with lifelike characters and imaginative creatures. Because of the size of the investment, each title feels too big to fail. It creates an enormous pressure to manage these triple-A projects. These games are the drivers of the industry to become more and more mainstream entertainment. We need to keep pushing the art of making triple-A games.”

Of course, Sony is also focusing on indie development for fresh titles. With development tools more accessible than ever, creators are finding themselves able to deliver high risk titles that can better capture player attention and imagination. Here is what Yoshida had to say about indie titles:

With the number of triple-A titles becoming smaller and the type of these triple-A games becoming somewhat similar to avoid taking risks, there’s a vast, open field of types of games for the indie devs to explore and succeed. I’m a huge fan of indie games as I always enjoy fresh game experiences and artistic expressions. Indie titles drive innovation and experimentation in the industry and it’s important for the gaming landscape that we continue to support this flourishing market.”

The growing landscape of Indie options has definitely kept gaming fresh, while AAA titles have kept fans engaged and loyal to their respective consoles. While Sony continues to enjoy their success, the ever-changing atmosphere of gaming will ultimately show whether their PlayStation titles continue to deliver.
