The second season of The Punisher figures to be its last on Netflix. The streaming site cancelled Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, likely due to Disney’s plans to launch their own streaming service. Thankfully, fans can still look forward to new seasons of Jessica Jones and The Punisher before Netflix closes its own Marvel universe. Now they know exactly when they can begin binging on the vigilante’s final ride.

A new trailer released today features Frank Castle and his old adversary Billy Russo. After the first season, Castle left Russo scarred and beaten. That defeat did not sit well with the former soldier as he grapples with his inner demons. He dons a shattered black and white mask, making his transformation into infamous villain Jigsaw complete. Frank also struggles to calm his troubled mind, and the trailer flips back and forth between their bleak internal monologues. The pair’s mirroring mentalities should provide plenty of intense interactions throughout Season 2.

More importantly, the end of the trailer provided a debut date. Netflix will release Season 2 of The Punisher on January 18. That gives fans two weeks to prepare for 13 action-packed episodes of TV. The site has a tendency to spring release dates on their members with next to no warning, and this was no exception.

Technically, Netflix still has time to renew the popular Marvel series for a third season. However, Daredevil launched the service’s foray into comic book adaptations. With the flagship already cancelled, holding onto a secondary show seems doubtful at best. Plus, dealing with Disney’s lawyers almost never pays off. That certainty about the future, however, likely meant that the show runners knew the end was nigh during production. That should have provided them with enough time to put together a satisfying conclusion to the next gone-too-soon series. It will be bittersweet, but it will likely be one hell of a sprint to the finish line.

Season 2 of The Punisher debuts January 18 on Netflix. Season 1 is currently available for streaming.
