Beyond Good And Evil 2 Will Require Internet Connection To Play

There’s been intermittent information dumps on Ubisoft’s Beyond Good and Evil 2, a prequel of the original game released in 2003, and fans have been scavenging for every bit of new data possible. As a matter of fact, developers released an entire 25 minutes of interstellar gameplay earlier this month. Despite the fact that it’s still in the midst of heavy development, Beyond Good and Evil 2 looks phenomenal. Despite the story-heavy direction, there’s a slight catch when diving into gameplay – it’s going to require an internet connection the whole time.

For the gamers out there that preferred to enjoy their games off the grid or trying to disconnect from online interactions, this isn’t the ideal landscape to enjoy a narrative. Ubisoft explains the purpose for an entirely online gaming experience in their latest blog post:

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is an online, multiplayer game with a rich co-op and seamless experience. As such, the game will only be playable with an internet connection in order to have seamless navigation, receive dynamic updates, and play with friends (which is certainly better when you’re playing as a Space Pirate!). The choice to play co-op, however, remains yours to make, so playing BGE2 solo is absolutely possible if you’re into that lone Space Pirate kinda thing…”

In other related news, Beyond Good and Evil 2 will feature a slew of nods to the original game including a spyglass that acknowledges Jade’s camera, allowing players to peak in on an enemy’s abilities or stats on a recruitable NPCs. If you haven’t witnessed it in all its glory already, there’s a stunning, hair-raising trailer that reintroduces Jade. This time, however, there seems to be a stark difference in her purpose. Could she be one of the main antagonists this time?

What do you think about the need for an internet connection to play the game? Do you feel like the video game industry is too attached to online play and not enough offline? The original one needed no such thing! Let us know what you think in the comments section below or start a conversation on DFTG Facebook page.
