DFTG Recaps The Latest Movie/TV Trailers: October 24th (VIDEO)
A new batch of trailers have appeared since the last time we recapped, and the hype for this week’s lineup is decidedly more horrific than in previous weeks. With the Halloween season currently upon us, it’s no surprise why movies featuring demonic possession, ghost hauntings, and world-ending stakes have had footage creep from out of the shadows. Check out the list below as we recap the biggest movie and TV trailers of the week.
Reign of the Supermen
While DC’s live-action superhero exploits are currently going through a transition of sorts, the animated side of the universe is seeing an all-new chapter debut in its epic saga. Following the death of Superman, a series of new heroes emerge to inhabit the role of Earth’s new Man of Steel. The likes of John Henry Irons, Eradicator, Superboy, and Cyborg Superman have all stepped forward in this wake, but the might of this foursome is tested against the appearance of new foes (Manhunters?) invading with world-dominating intentions. Can anyone truly replace Superman? Reign of the Supermen will answer the question when it releases on home video sometime in 2019.
The Prodigy
I have little idea what’s happening in the trailer for The Prodigy, but I know that it gave me a legitimately good scare during its duration. Much about the movie is being kept in the shadows for maximum creep factor, but what can be gathered is a boy’s apparent turn to the dark side, and his mother’s attempts to subdue the mind-bending evil. The Prodigy surely looks like it could be a nerve-racking time when it appears in theaters on February 8th, 2019.
Mob Psycho 100
The supernatural manga-turned-anime Mob Psycho 100 has been a hit over in Japan for a number of years, but the series has since been long-desired for a release in the West. Adult Swim’s weekly Toonami block is now set to air the first season of the visually-impressive series, with episodes set to premiere during Toonami’s newly 7-hour lineup later this month.
Following the titular “Mob,” (real name Shigeo Kageyama), an emerging world of mystical beings and evil spirits slowly turns the character’s normally-reserved demeanor up to “100,” unleashing his hidden expanse of immense psychic power. Unless you’ve already seen the Japanese dub, we’ll discover the true extent of this “psycho” power when Mob Psycho 100 debuts on Toonami October 27th.
Escape Room
Survival is the name of the game in Escape Room, where a seemingly random assortment of strangers are collected to take on the challenge of a series of dangerous puzzles. A million dollar prize awaits on the other side of these pulse-pounding tests, but not without putting the group’s collective neves, and apparently the laws of physics, against the fire. The mystery and sheer impracticality of this room-hopping premise would draw comparisons to the torturous Saw and Cube film series’, and that’s definately not a bad thing in this writer’s eyes. We’ll see how deep the Escape Room goes when it opens on January 4th, 2019.
The Curse of La Llorona
The Mexican legend of La Llorona (a.k.a. The Weeping Woman) has kept youngsters and often adults without a wink of sleep, the threat of death looming high for whoever hears her ghostly cries. A movie featuring the child-stalking figure of folklore was recently revealed by Warner Bros. and teased the murderous spree that’ll surely take place during its runtime. There isn’t much variety in the scary scenes showcased (it’s just a teaser after all), but this first footage seems pretty effective in its main goal: keeping parents eyes squarely locked on their kids. The Curse of La Llorona appears in theaters on April 19th, 2019.
The Possession of Hannah Grace
Movies featuring demonic possession have seemingly cornered every avenue on the creepy spectrum in this day and age, but The Possession of Hannah Grace sports a concept I can’t recall seeing too often. The main character is indeed haunted by a horrific presence, but this time evil takes the form of a reanimated corpse, introducing an additionally unsettling layer to the already-hideous proceedings. Completing the hat trick of horrors is the demon’s supernatural penchant for wall-climbing and methodically-timed jumpscares, but we’ll see what other hair-raisers await when The Possession of Grace Hannah crawls into theaters on November 30th.
