Sony Wants More Exclusive Multiplayer Games
When you think of the best console-exclusive titles in recent years, what games spring to mind? In no particular order, God of War, The Last of Us, and Horizon: Zero Dawn register immediately. All three are PlayStation exclusive titles. Sony has owned the single-player experience for almost the entirety of this console war. However, Microsoft currently holds the upper hand on exclusive multiplayer titles. With Halo Infinite and Gears of War 5 on the way, Microsoft seems primed to tighten their grip on multiplayer titles.
If some Sony execs had their way, however, that gap may close quickly.
At Develop: Brighten, Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida discussed the future of PlayStation. One of his primary points was his hopes for more PlayStation-exclusive multiplayer games:
“He (Yoshida) is happy with the success of SP games citing God of War and Horizon as brilliant but says that he wishes they had more success on the multiplayer side.”
This potential paradigm shift could invigorate the Fourth Console War once again. The battle hasn’t been close for some time. If Sony began directly poaching Microsoft’s strong multiplayer base, that could qualify as a deathblow. Turning players from Halo to a rookie title sounds nearly impossible, but you never know what Sony could conjure up. Sony’s resources, talent, and dedication have become indisputable following the success of exclusive after exclusive. It will be fascinating to see whether or not they can create a multiplayer experience to rival Microsoft’s top franchises.
In my mind, the question is not whether Sony can challenge Microsoft, but whether or not they should. Sony’s sales have been demonstrably better. Xbox has shown no signs of making a legitimate challenge to Playstation’s throne. Why not continue to churn out smash hit after smash hit without starting a battle that might not be winnable?
Gearnuke provided a full breakdown of Yoshida’s comments. Among the other more fascinating topics was the “horrifying moment” of learning PS3’s launch price. A few million parents would have to agree on that one.
Do you think Sony can challenge Microsoft’s multiplayer behemoths? Do you think they should actually attempt the feat? Let us know in the comments, and follow DFTG on Twitter for more gaming updates!
