Avengers: Infinity War Box Office Tops ‘Star Wars’ As Biggest Opening Ever
The foreboding culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War, finally phased into theaters this past Friday and the result has been brutally spectacular to say the least. Fans from all over the world have been showing up to to witness the epic showdown between Marvel’s mightiest heroes and the Mad Titan Thanos, and the experience has proven to be a hugely monumental one. In just a sole weekend, the Avengers: Infinity War box office has scored the highest earning opening in history.
On track for an estimated $250 million in 4,474 theaters across North America, the first week of Infinity War‘s run is set to become the largest domestic debut of all time, taking the top spot from 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned $248 million. Even more impressively, the latest Avengers film has made an additional $380 million from the rest of the world, bringing the total to $630 million worldwide. This astounding amount pushes Avengers: Infinity War even more over the edge as the overall biggest first-weekend for a film ever.
The considerable Avengers: Infinity War box office is made even more incredible without factoring in the region of China, who is home to the world’s second largest population of moviegoers. When Chinese audiences see the film release on May 11th, the already-huge haul is expected to dramatically increase further, possibly even reaching the coveted $1 billion threshold, that is, if a second weekend of success doesn’t do it first.
The new superhero film is doing wonders for Marvel’s previous outing Black Panther as well, which earned a respectable $4.4 million a full 10 weeks after it initially opened. As for the future, Ant-Man and the Wasp is up next for release on July 6th and Captain Marvel is set for March 8th, 2019. Phase 3 of the MCU comes to a close on May 3rd, 2019 with the tentatively titled Avengers 4, which will follow-up the events of Infinity War.
