A recent leak has revealed that GameStop is getting into the video game rental business. Discovered by Resetera user Virtua, a GameStop ad promoting its ‘PowerPass’ rental service will allow gamers to rent games from GameStop. The new program will allow its users pay $60 up front in order to spend the next six months playing as many pre-owned games as the player wants – though there are a few stipulations.

The pre-owned games available through PowerPass will depend on the local GameStops’ supply of pre-owned games. PowerPass users can only rent out one game at a time, too. Once the gamer is done with their game, they can return it to a GameStop and rent out another one. There is no limit whatsoever to the amount of games PowerPass users can rent within the six month period, as long as only one game is out at a time. The rental service is also only available to PowerUp Rewards members, so that GameStop can track the games that are rented.

As a bit of a ‘cherry on top’ deal through PowerPass, gamers that are taking advantage of the program can choose one pre-owned game to keep at the end of the six months. So, if a gamer keeps going back to one specific game throughout the six months, they can simply choose to keep it at the end of the half year.

There are a few concerning factors regarding PowerPass. For one, players may be turned off by the limited availability per GameStop given the nature of pre-owned games. Not unlike the Blockbuster stores of old, if all the copies of a particularly desirable game are rented out, there’s no telling when one will be brought back to the store. In addition to this, the overall quality of the pre-owned game discs and cartridges will lower significantly the more they get used, which can lead to some frustration and lost inventory should improper handling prove to be fatal to a particular game. GameStop will have to set some ground rules up front in order to mitigate the potential loss of pre-owned stock. The new PowerPass program starts on November 19, 2017.
