Many of actor Stephen Lang’s fans were upset when it was revealed that Josh Brolin had landed the part of Cable in the upcoming Deadpool 2 film instead of him. That said, it appears that Lang is going to be too busy to take on other roles, at least in the near future. In a recent interview with Empire, director James Cameron revealed that Lang’s character in Avatar, Colonel Miles Quaritch, will not only be returning for the sequel, but will in fact be reprising his role as the main villain in all four Avatar sequels.

The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherf***er through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park.”

It will be interesting to see how Quaritch will be portrayed in the Avatar sequels, given that he was killed off before the credits rolled during the original film. That said, this is science fiction and James Cameron is at the helm, so there are plenty of plausible ways to bring the love-to-hate villain back to the big screen. It would not be impossible for Lang’s character to get cloned back into existence, perhaps as some sort of insurance policy for the higher-ups that venture to Pandora.

Quaritch isn’t the only character getting brought back from the dead for the Avatar sequels. It was also previously confirmed that Sigourney Weaver would be reprising her role as Dr. Grace Augustine, though the details behind her return to the series are currently unknown. Given the events in the latter half of Avatar, it is possible that her character may get resurrected much in the same way protagonist Jake Sully did at the end of the film despite the transfer not initially working. Fans of the series will have to wait until December 18th, 2020 to find out how both Dr. Augustine and Quaritch make their way back to the world of the living.
