After an approaching decade of being released, it appears Rockstar Games is finally making the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6. The news was announced this morning as part of a studio update offered by the developer, and buried under several new blurbs regarding the upcoming offerings of GTA 5, Rockstar officially acknowledged an all-new entry in the wild crime-committing franchise is currently in development.

Addressing the “unprecedented longevity” of GTA 5 and fans’ repeated search for answers regarding a potential GTA 6, Rockstar confirmed “the next entry” in the series is now “underway” and in “active development” by devs. “​With every new project we embark on,” the statement read, “our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.”

“​We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”

Confirmation of Grand Theft Auto 6 is sure to be a welcome sight for fans as it comes after over 8 years and three console generations of post-launch support for GTA 5, a game that was originally released back in 2013. Over the years, the title has held a steady skyrocket of popularity due to its multiplayer component GTA Online, with a regular output of updates and expansions pushing sales past 155 million as of November 2021, crowning it the second best-selling game of all time.

As time has gone on, the idea of GTA 6 has been a regular trend on social media, with rumors suggesting such features as the return of familiar locations, next-gen intelligent NPCs, and a possible timed exclusivity deal with PlayStation 5. However, as active development has only just begun, it’s not likely many official details will be divulged by the team at Rockstar any time soon. Though, we’re sure that won’t stop fans from continuing the flow speculation in the meantime.
