Already featuring a whopping total of 81 fighters, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate touts one of the most impressive fighting game rosters in history. Marking the occasion, today saw the Tekken series’ Kazuya make his debut as the game’s newest entrant, leaving only one yet-unnamed character to be revealed in Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Even as fans clamor for more, this last DLC was always expected to be the final fighter for Ultimate, and it looks like game director Masahiro Sakurai is still aiming to keep this finale intact.

As revealed in the closing moments of the latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate showcase, Sakurai confirmed the upcoming Challenger Pack 11 expansion will indeed “be the last one” in terms of DLC fighters, additionally driving this point home by saying, “there won’t be any more after that.” Though little else was said regarding this unknown fighter, the content was assured to have a release planned for later this year, though, an announcement would be “a while” away from happening due to the ongoing stay-at-home protocols put in place by the pandemic.

Additionally, he recalled the long road of development that went into the past dozen DLC fighters as well as the preceding work on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, amounting to nearly 10 years of work for Sakurai. “Up until now, we’ve created all sorts of fighters and stages,” he recalled. “Gathering all of these games, new and old, and compiling them into a single product is a task that has meant a lot to me. Now that I think about it, it’s been close to 10 years since Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems was in development.”

“I’ve been working on this for a long time. You could call it my life’s work.”

​As of now, there’s no reason to expect any more DLC fighters after this next bout, so fans are eagerly anticipating who will ultimately make the cut. With the reveal of new Devil May Cry and Skyrim Mii Fighter costumes, the list of possible contenders is clearly smaller than it was yesterday, but fans have since thrown around names like Kingdom Hearts’ Sora, Master Chief, and Crash Bandicoot on social media in the hopes that any of them might be the unknown number 11. Of course, Sakurai could always pull a fast one and give us what we’ve been wanting all along.
