The developers at CD Projekt RED have been having a rough go of it over the past few months. Following the mishandled launch of the highly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077, a lot of goodwill was lost and a few lawsuits were filed. That said, something else has now been thrown on their plate as it has been revealed that they have suffered a cyber attack.

In a recent tweet, the Cyberpunk 2077 devs posted an update on the situation that has lead to source code for their titles being held for ransom. “Yesterday we discovered that we have become a victim of a targeted cyber attack, due to which some of our internal systems have been compromised,” reads the letter. “An unidentified actor gained unauthorized access to our internal network, collected certain date belonging to CD PROJEKT capital group, and left a ransom note the content of which we release to the public.”

The Cyberpunk 2077 devs then note that while some of their devices have been encrypted by the actor, the studio’s backups are still intact and they’ve already begun restoring the data after securing the IT infrastructure. “We will not give in to the demands nor negotiate with the actor, being aware that this may eventually lead to the release of the compromised data,” the letter continues. “We are taking necessary steps to mitigate the consequences of such a release, in particular by approaching any parties that may be affected due to the breach.”

The studio also mentions that at this time, “to our best knowledge,” no personal data of the players and users of their services has been compromised. The studio is working with the proper authorities, including IT forensic specialists, the police, and the President of the Personal Data Protection Office. Needless to say, this is a very serious matter and we hope it is resolved swiftly with minimal damage.
