343 Acknowledges Guardians Mistakes – Halo 6 to Focus on Master Chief
While 2015’s Halo 5: Guardians may have been positively received for the most part, there was a glaring issue that fans could not get past. Where was Master Chief? Gamers have come to love the Chief since the first title in the franchise, and were incredibly disappointed when there was a severe lack of him in Guardians. Recently, studio head at 343 Industries Kiki Wolfkill and franchise director Frank O’Connor sat down with GamesTM to discuss the disappointment that fans felt, along with what they have in store for Halo 6. Thanks to WCCFTech, we know what was said in the interview. O’Connor stated:
We took some digs for storytelling in Halo 5, but they were absolutely merited. We very much realized that people wanted Master Chief’s story of Halo 5.”
They said that 343 attempted to market Guardians in a way that would bring about surprise. Unfortunately, that backfired. Instead of getting a surprise, fans reacted with disappointment “because they wanted more Chief.” Who could blame them? He contains the eyes that players have been looking through for over 15 years. Of course, fans’ reactions didn’t catch O’Connor off guard. He said:
It wasn’t that surprising to me, but the volume of ‘give us more Chief’ at the end of Halo 5 was significant and so I think if anything he’s slightly more important now than he has ever been, certainly to our franchise.”
Luckily, it seems that 343 is one to pay attention to the fans. After the disappointment that was the lack of Master Chief in Guardians, they wholeheartedly intend to focus on the Chief in Halo 6. Instead of highlighting new characters and “expanding the playable” ones, they’ve “shifted the focus a little bit to making the world a little bit more realistic and compelling and, I would say, more fun for players who get to inhabit the Chief in the future, pretty much as they demanded.” While Halo 6 hasn’t officially been announced, it is obviously on its way.
