Xbox One Games May Not Require Full Downloads to Play in the Near Future

The latest generation of console gaming is wondrous in terms of titles, but one thing seems to hinder gamers that have large physical and digital games: hard drive space. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 both require a game to be fully downloaded and installed on the console’s HDD (hard drive disk) or an external HDD in order to be played. The lack of space longterm forces players to uninstall games to make room, and can discourage them from revisiting a title due to storage restraints. It seems that Xbox One owners may have a slight fix to that problem in the near future, thanks to Intelligent Delivery.

According to sources, Microsoft is designing a new system internally known as Intelligent Delivery, that will allow players to save HDD space as well as reduce download times significantly. The system will allegedly allow players to only download and install the sections of a particular game that they need or want to play, and can download more sections as needed. This means that Xbox gamers that aren’t ready to make the jump to the Xbox One X won’t have to download the 4K assets to future games, resulting in some incredible space saving.

According to the report, the division of content into sections will also allow players to not download game modes that they won’t use. For instance, if a player wanted to play Mass Effect: Andromeda’s campaign without the intent of playing online multiplayer, they could simply not download the multiplayer mode. This would also work if a player wanted to only play online multiplayer without the game’s solo campaign.

Intelligent Delivery could also open support for developers that wish to create multiple discs for a title. Having multiple discs could allow for easier sectioning off of certain game modes and more. The new system would be able to handle support for up to 15 discs per game, essentially giving gamers more control over what is installed on their consoles.

No official word from Microsoft has been given concerning Intelligent Delivery, or its potential release date, but some speculate that if it is launched in the near future, the Xbox One X’s release in November may be a perfect time frame. What are your thoughts on the sectioning off of games to provide gamers the option to download to their personal needs, as opposed to a full game? Do you think this will open the door to “online only” or “campaign only” discs from developers? Have you already pre-ordered an Xbox One X? Let us know in the comments section below.
