Square Enix CEO Debunks Deus Ex Franchise Rumors
The past two entries of the Deus Ex franchise – Human Revolution and Mankind Divided – were both well-received by critics and the series’ fan base. That said, despite the high praise for both titles Deus Ex: Mankind Divided unfortunately did not sell well, leading to rumors earlier this year that suggested that the Deus Ex series as a whole was finished. In a recent interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda addressed said rumors, revealing that the Deus Ex franchise is far from over.
“We have never said anything about discontinuing that title but for some reason that’s the rumour out on the market,” said Matsuda. This is still admittedly a rather vague statement, though the CEO followed it up with a reminder that any delay between Mankind Divided and a new title in the series can be attributed to a number of reasons, including an already full line-up of games in development. “What I can say is Eidos Montreal has always developed Deus Ex, and the issue is we do not have limitless resources, Matsuda said. “We have several big titles that we work with and that’s partly a factor in what our line-up looks like. Of course, it would be ideal if we could work on all of them all of the time, but the fact of the matter is some titles have to wait their turn.”
The reason there isn’t a Deus Ex right now is just a product of our development line-up because there are other titles we are working on.”
Earlier this year Square Enix made the decision to separate itself from both developer studio IO Interactive and its Hitman franchise. In the public earnings report that announced the decision, the Japanese publisher claimed the decision was in part an attempt at narrowing its focus on “key franchises”. Based on what we are hearing from Matsudo, it sounds like Deus Ex is one of said franchises.
Despite a new installment of the Deus Ex franchise not currently being developed, there is at the very least some internal dialogue happening within Square Enix on the direction a new Deus Ex title may take. “We are already internally discussing and exploring what we want to do with the next installment of it,” Matsuda said. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is now available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
