Square Enix Releases Stellar "Back Stage" RTX Tech Demo (VIDEO)

Now that development has officially wrapped on Final Fantasy XV, Square Enix’s Luminous Productions studio has begun pushing boundaries with ray tracing technology in the form of path tracing, which enables real-time rendering of shadows, reflections, and lifelike lighting. The studio recently released a new “Back Stage” tech demo that puts this technology full on display, and it is absolutely breathtaking to observe. Check it out below:

This collaboration with NVIDIA is powered by a single GeForce RTX 2080 TI, running in real-time with full path-traced ray tracing. Here’s the full breakdown of the demo courtesy of Luminous Productions studio head Takeshi Aramaki.

Back Stage is a showcase demo of our work to answer the question, “How can you use ray tracing in a next generation game?” GeForce RTX graphics cards have power beyond our imagination, and with NVIDIA’s technology even real-time path tracing has become a reality. Together with Luminous Engine and RTX technology, we have taken one more step forward towards the kind of beautiful and realistic game that we strive to create.”

This is, of course, likely leading to something the studio is currently working on. Could it be the next Final Fantasy game from Square Enix, or perhaps a completely new IP? Only time will tell. In the meantime, at least we have a bunch of pretty cool stuff to look at.
