Facial Animations in Shenmue 3 Looking Better After Teaser Critique (VIDEO)

When it was announced at E3 2015 that the long awaited RPG Shenmue 3 was finally happening, Sega fans got really excited to finally get what they have been asking for. Unfortunately these same fans were expecting a high quality game and when they got a glimpse of the graphics, there were a lot of concerns about the lack of facial expression.

Fans of the series pointed out that in the teaser trailer released a few weeks ago, the graphics looked a lot like the first two installments instead of modernized, high quality visuals. The Shenmue 3 developers took the criticism and began working on the problem. The team gave an update on the work they have been doing to fix the facial animation system so that the fans can witness the improvements themselves.

In the update above, the animation team is messing around with an old woman’s facial expressions, showing that the faces will no longer be expressionless; a common complaint. It’s obvious that they are still very much working on this title and what the fans witnessed from the teaser trailer is not necessarily what they will see once Shenmue 3 is launched. Developers usually strive to give the players regular updates on their games, but some fans don’t realize that what they see in these updates are literal works in progress.

Shenmue 3 will launch on PS4 and PC sometime late in 2018. What did you think of the teaser trailer? Were you concerned about the character’s facial expressions as well?
