As with any complex mechanism, a tune-up every now and again is completely necessary to keep things running smoothly. Sony looks to be doing this with their upcoming plans to run server maintenance on the PlayStation Network. Scheduled for tonight, May 22nd, the next bout of PSN maintenance will bring down several PlayStation-branded services for one hour between 10PM and 11PM local time. The limited online experience is expected to include all currently supported systems: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita.

According to an announcement on their support site, PlayStation Network downtime won’t affect all of its online services, and players will still be able to access a fair amount of programs during the outage. More specifically, Account Management, the PlayStation Store, and media platforms PlayStation Music and PlayStation Video will all be down for the 60-minute count.”Gaming and social” are also said to be limited, but the exact extent is currently unknown.

We apologize for any inconvenience,” Sony said, regarding the PSN maintenance. “We strive to ensure that PlayStation Network services are available at all times, but occasionally we must take PlayStation Network offline to perform essential maintenance and implement feature enhancements. We are working hard to reduce the duration of each maintenance.”

Sony goes on to recommend players activate their PlayStation 4 systems, as to avoid most of the maintenance session’s online pitfalls. Console activation can normally be achieved through a device’s Account Management settings, but a full guide on how to accomplish this can be read here.
