Hello Kitty And Pikachu Appointed Official Ambassadors Of Osaka

It’s not everyday that fictional cartoon characters become official ambassadors of a region, but if it was going to happen anywhere it would be in Japan. Pikachu and Hello Kitty were appointed as cultural diplomats of the city of Osaka by Kono Taro, the foreign minister of Japan.  The two characters were honored as representatives in preparation of Expo 2025 taking place in the respective region, where nations gather to deliberate international affairs. Though other countries and regions have already chosen theirs, it’s safe to say that Japan has the one up on the kawaii gauge. Check it out in the Twitter post by the foreign minister himself:

Both Pikachu and Hello Kitty have become global icons, often growing up as childhood toys and idols. Not only are these two mascots two of the most recognizable characters in the world, Japan certainly has full reigns to do with it what they will. Further promoting the Pokemon and Sanrio brands, the country of the rising sun continues to win in wit and humor. What other sovereign nation can say they have a Pokemon or a Hello Kitty as a government official? Nobody, that’s who.

Of course, there’s more to these two than just the title of cultural ambassador of Osaka, Japan. Expo 2025 only occurs every 5 years, an event that takes place to raise awareness of current global issues. During this time, administers, world leaders, and executives discuss and mediate any problems and solutions. It won’t be an easy task for Hello Kitty and Pikachu to bring some semblance of peace, but if anyone were to do the job right, it would be them.

What do you think about these two iconic characters paving their way as government officials? Did you know that a permanent Pokemon cafe is staking its claim in Tokyo?
