Persona5 Game Director Katsura Hashino Talks About the Inspiration Behind His Work (VIDEO)

The latest Toco Toco interview featured Persona5 Game Director Katsura Hashino who discusses directing the latest installment and shows us the real life Tokyo locations from the game. We still can’t get our hands on Persona5 in the states unfortunately, but it was released in Japan at the end of last year. We showed you guys interviews with a couple of the voice actors, Erika Harlacher, who voices Ann, and Max Mittelman, who voices the character Ryuji. This time we get to see how modern Tokyo integrates itself into Persona5 thanks to Hashino. Check out the interview below.

Hashino has directed Persona 3, 4, and now 5 – as well as Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and Catherine. He says that he preferred the story of Persona5 to take place in a large city rather than a small town, which is why he ultimately chose Tokyo as the location. It’s amazing to watch him walk the same steps as the main protagonist in the real world while showing its in-game counterpart. He says that the fictional town that is the center of the story, Yongenjaya, was inspired by the Sangenjaya District. Hashino talks about how the protagonist has no place to go when he arrives in town and in a way, the studio felt the same.

“The Company was facing a difficult period during the time we were developing Persona5. The only thing we could do was release a good game. We had long discussions about this with the team, as we were walking in the streets. It is as if we didn’t have any place to go either. It was also a trigger in a way, as we were writing the story of the characters.”
