New Yo-kai Watch Game Under Development, Inspired By The Anime
Yo-kai Watch is another family-friendly franchise catered to kids, which began on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. Developed by studio Level-5, the franchise exploded in popularity earning itself several graphic novel adaptations, toys, and merchandise that expanded to western audiences as well. There was a TV series that aired in the United States as well. Since then, the franchise has been relatively quiet, but a brand new Yo-kai Watch game is now in development.
Titled Yo-kai Watch Academy Y, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino announced the spin-off on Twitter alongside a screenshot of in-game footage. Inspired by the animated series Yo-kai Watch Jam: Yo-kai Academy Y – Encounter With N, the game will feature a different gameplay mechanics compared to the mainline video game series. Check it out below:
テレビアニメ妖怪学園Yいかがでしたか!これを見た後に映画に行くと大惨事になりそうですがwそれはそれで大いに楽しめると思います!そして開発中のゲーム画面を少々。妖怪学園は妖怪ウォッチはとはまた違うタイプのシステムになります!お楽しみに! pic.twitter.com/7OtI3AeU2P

Other than the screenshot and short caption above, the platform and release date were not revealed. Based on the image, this will likely launch on the Nintendo Switch. If the trend with Yo-kai Watch 4++ is any indication, it will probably branch out to PlayStation 4 as well. The latter title has not broken through to western audiences yet, but plans for a global release were previously announced at Anime Expo earlier this year.
