A New Single Player MechWarrior Game is on its Way (VIDEO)
Piranha Games has announced a new single player MechWarrior (MW) game is in development. Titled Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries, the game is set to release in 2018, but few details have been revealed about the upcoming title.
Piranha Games President, Russ Bullock, took the stage at this year’s MechCon 2016 to announce and reveal the first footage for their upcoming game. According to Bullock, Mercenaries will be a new single player standalone experience. The current team developing the game is separate from the team working on Piranah’s Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) game, MechWarrior Online. During the reveal, Bullock stated:
“Our main goal with MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is to provide fans with a standalone, story-driven single-player experience that allows for a great amount of flexibility in terms of player choice, built on a foundation of the intense, tactical mech combat the franchise is known for.”
There hasn’t been a single player MW game in well over a decade. Piranha’s MMO, MW Online, went live in 2012, but is strictly a multiplayer game. The MMO currently runs on CryEngine, while MW5 will run on Unreal Engine 4. The only confirmed platform, at the time of writing, is PC meaning that no other consoles have been announced.
The official synopsis from the game’s dedicated website reads:
In MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries you will adopt the role of a rookie MechWarrior pilot thrust into combat as the Third Succession War continues to fracture the Inner Sphere. Take contracts from the factions of your choosing and engage in tactical, first-person, PvE ‘Mech combat through an immersive, career-based Mercenary campaign driven by player choice. Victory, prestige, and profit will not only require skill on the battlefield, but in the acquisition, maintenance, and enhancement of your BattleMechs.
No official release date has been confirmed for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. While we wait for a release date, go ahead and check out the Pre-Alpha footage which was presented at MechCon 2016:
