Mortal Kombat 11 Joker DLC Possibly Teasing Injustice 3 (VIDEO)

Mortal Kombat 11 Joker Injustice 3

Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios has long had a leaning toward DC Comics, the studio responsible for the Injustice series as well as a noted MK vs DC crossover title in 2008. With this in mind, it’s no surprise to find references relating to the comic book imprint sprinkled around Mortal Kombat 11 – with some such as Cassie Quinn being more blatant than others. The approaching addition of villain character Joker has now dropped yet another DC doozy, seemingly hinting at the existence of Injustice 3.

Featured in an array of emerging gameplay, many of the criminal clown’s violent moves were given an initial showcase, including a few instances of pre-match dialogue. One especially-telling exchange has now teased a new entry in NetherRealm’s Injustice fighting game series, the newly-discovered reference appearing in MK11 when players place two Jokers against each other in a match. “Only two of us? That’s an injustice,” the first Joker says, the second Joker responding with the playful phrase: “What we could do with a third.”

While not absolute confirmation of a third Injustice, this in-game conversation surely paints a picture that it’s at least on NetherRealm’s radar. Seen above, Creative Director for Mortal Kombat 11 Ed Boon was quick to address the seeming trilogy tease on social media, the infamously cheeky dev denying the reference carries any substance and is “purely coincidental.”

While there’s certainly a possibility that NetherRealm isn’t paving the way for Injustice 3, it’s likely that the complete opposite is actually true. With the game’s Kombat Pack DLC currently winding down for Mortal Kombat 11, the studio’s next project could feasibly be a continuance of the DC superhero series–especially as Ed Boon himself has teased as much in the past.

Mortal Kombat 11 is out now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Joker goes live for Kombat Pack owners on January 28th and as a standalone DLC on February 4th.

What do you think? Do you feel that NetherRealm is laying the seeds for Injustice 3, or is there still that rumored Kombat Pack 2 to consider?
