Metal Gear Solid Movie Adaptation Script Complete, Director Confirms
It was announced in 2016 that a Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation was in the works with Jordan Vogt-Roberts at the helm as director. Since then, news on its progress remained relatively quiet with commentary from Vogt-Roberts here and there, but the Kong: Skull Island director finally hit a breakthrough in its development – the script is finally complete.
Vogt-Roberts revealed the news during a sit-down with IGN, speaking on the vision and passion it takes to make a good adaptation. Referencing other video game films out there, he elaborates on his efforts and ideas to create the best possible cinematic version of Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series. There are certainly features he hopes to bring forth to make it a successful experience for fans of the franchise. Elaborating on this front, he said:
There’s a huge difference between an active experience and a passive experience, and they make you feel different things in different ways and I think that most people have tried to adapt games by simply adapting plot mechanics and story as opposed to trying to tap into what you felt when you played that game. What did you feel the first time you played it? And then how do you translate that feeling cinematically?”
Since last year, the script experienced rework to better capture “Kojima’s voice.” “If and when” it comes out has yet to be determined. However, Vogt-Roberts asserts that it’s “one of the coolest scripts” he’s ever written. Working alongside the script writer for Metal Gear, Derek Connolly, the director wants to stay true to the Kojima’s artistry even if that means sacrificing potential revenue.
Let’s really think about whether we’re making the truest, most balls-to-the-wall Metal Gear version of this –the most Kojima version of this, and even if that means we make it for a little bit less money, let’s make the version of this that’s true to what it is, fully committed to what Kojima’s voice is.”
There’s no doubt the director has the passion and drive to make an authentic cinematic experience. Metal Gear was once all the rage and though it still maintains a solid fan base, perhaps this is exactly what the series needs to revitalize it.
