Live-Action System Shock Series Greenlit For New Streaming Service
The streaming wars continue to be a big focus of the entertainment industry, and the big streaming services have been betting big on adapting video game franchises for film and television. Netflix is doubling down on their success with adapting The Witcher by greenlighting several spinoffs, and Amazon Prime has a big budget adaptation of Fallour in the works as well. System Shock has been a beloved classic game that many have felt would be prime for a film or television series. Now, a live-action System Shock series has finally been greenlit for a brand new streaming service.
Deadline has reported on the new live-action System Shock series that has been greenlit. The series will be produced for Binge, a new video game-focused streaming service that is set to launch next year. Binge will work in partnership with Nightdive Studios, who currently own the rights to the franchise, to faithfully bring the world of System Shock to life. Nightdive Studios founder Stephen Kick had this to say about their partnership:
I’ve always believed that a live action adaptation of System Shock would be the perfect medium to retell the harrowing story of Citadel station and its rogue AI that subjects the crew to unimaginable horror. We’re very excited to see the talented team at Binge bring System Shock to life in horrifyingly real and new ways.”
Kick will serve as an executive producer for the series, along with Nightdive’s Director of Business Development, Larry Kuperman. Binge’s chief content officer Allan Ungar is going to produce the series. The first game, released in 1994, focuses on a hacker waking up from a coma in the year 2072 having to fend off various enemies controlled by an evil AI named SHODAN. Likely the series will adapt this story for its initial season. Hopefully the series meets fan expectations, and helps make Binge a streaming service that lives up to its name.
