Recent Teasers From Crystal Dynamics May Suggest Legacy Of Kain Reboot

Legacy of Kain

The Legacy of Kain franchise is one that was beloved by action-adventure fans in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. The games were primarily developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. The last title, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, was released back in 2003. Since then, not much has been heard about the franchise … until very recently.

Crystal Dynamics has been systematically reviving beloved franchises from yesteryear. Tomb Raider and Hitman have both received revivals that have been rather successful. A series of recent Tweets from the developers have fans of the Legacy of Kain franchise squirming in hopes of a new game or reboot. The most recent of these posts happened earlier in the week when they posted an image of Raziel from Soul Reaver, with the caption: “I am Raziel, first-born of His lieutenants. I stood with Kain and my brethren at the dawn of the empire.”

This is in no way an official announcement, but that hasn’t stopped fans from getting their hopes up. This isn’t the first post by the devs regarding characters from the Legacy of Kain series in recent weeks. Crystal Dynamic posted back to back images on the 12th and 13th of October. The first post on the 12th seemed innocent enough. The post features a rough illustration of Nosgoth with the words “Published in 1996 by [Crystal Dynamics], Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was the first of a legendary series introducing fans to Nosgoth.” The post seemed more nostalgic than anything else. The post from the 13th features yet another image of Raziel.

Nothing from the tweets solidifies, or even fully hints that the team is working on a Legacy of Kain title, but why the sudden focus on the franchise’s characters? From the looks of their upcoming schedule, it would be hard to figure out when and where a new entry into the series could fit in. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have a partnership with Marvel for upcoming titles, including a brand new Avengers game. Leaks of a possible Shadow of the Tomb Raider game have surfaced, which if true would keep the studio quite busy. Busy enough that it would be completely shocking if a new Legacy of Kain game announcement was made any time in the immediate future.

There is, however, the possibility that the companies could outsource other studios to recreate the series. The current trend of HD remasters isn’t that far out of reach for a beloved franchise such as this. This would allow for the Avengers and (possible) Tomb Raider games to be unaffected, while simultaneously giving Kain fans something to look forward to.

Until an official announcement has been made, this is all purely speculation, but fans shouldn’t lose hope quite yet. Avengers has no official release date, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider has yet to be officially announced.
