Paris Games Week ended on a brutal but exciting note as Sony unveiled a new trailer for The Last of Us. This new trailer lacks the familiar faces fans were anticipating and instead launches viewers into a scene that violently escalates as it unfolds. Some fans even believe that one of the new faces is Ellies mom. Readers who haven’t seen it yet can check it out below:

While fans are divided on whether or not the trailer pushed the envelope too far when it comes to violence, they can agree that the game is highly anticipated. More so, fans are speculating heavily on what the trailer is all about and if the character is indeed Ellies mom Anna. Ever the one to want to watch fans twist, Naughty Dog had this to say on the YouTube trailer:

At its core, The Last of Us Part II is still very much about Ellie and Joel, but for this reveal, we wanted to showcase several new characters that are integral to their next journey. We’re sure you have many questions after watching this scene. We’re also pretty sure that we’re going to see all sorts of theories about whom these characters are, where and when this scene takes place, and how all of this fits into Ellie and Joel’s next story. For now we’re keeping mum, but we’re excited to see what y’all make of this piece of the puzzle.”

Of all the theories racing about the internet right now, the biggest is that the woman wearing the noose is Ellies mom. Fans know from the first game that Anna had died giving birth to Ellie, and all she has left of her mother is a letter. It is possible in the setting that her mom survived, and it would certainly mean that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree in terms of being tough.

One supporting piece of evidence fans are clinging to is a series of tweets that went out naming the new characters. As seen above, this characters name is conveniently barred out with just enough black squares to cover 4 letters. It could be a coincidence, or Naughty Dog throwing gas on the fire, although fans will likely keep up with the notion that this is Ellies mom until proven otherwise. Ultimately, fans will have to wait until an unknown date in 2018 to know for sure. Keep up with DFTG incase something surfaces before then.
