John Simm Returns as ‘The Master’ in Doctor Who, Steven Moffat Gives Explanation

The Tenth Series of the new Doctor Who series premieres this week and it is sure to be significant since it will be the debut season of the newest companion, Bill. This series will also apparently be Peter Capaldi’s final season as the Twelfth regeneration of the Doctor and the departure of Steven Moffat as show runner. This season already appears to be full of big events, but apparently there is room for at least one more because John Simm returns this season as The Master.

A new interview with Steven Moffat at RadioTimes.com has shared the thought process that went into this season as John Simm returns to play The Doctor’s biggest enemy/friend. Moffat states in this interview that he always thought it would be fun to have two versions of the Master meet each other. However, Moffat wanted to make sure that before making this happen, whoever the current iteration of The Master was would need to be established as the definitive version, and only after that would bringing another version feel special. Thus brings in John Simm, who was the last person to portray The Master before the current incarnation portrayed by Michelle Gomez. It sounds as though Simm was always open to returning though as Moffat says:

“He’d always said that he’d quite like to come back, and at the End of Time screening he said ‘Well I feel that now David’s steeping down as the Doctor I feel I should step down as The Master. And he came and found me at the drinks and said ‘I didn’t mean it, I’m perfectly happy to come back.”

Most Doctor Who fans are likely to be elated at the news of seeing two versions of The Master on screen at once. Let’s just see if the Doctor’s biggest frenemy can get along with themselves.
