Hayao Miyazaki’s Final Animated Film Production Will Begin This Year

Hayao Miyazaki’s films have touched the hearts of people around the world. His name and the creative studio he founded, Studio Ghibli, are the biggest in Japanese animation and this upcoming film may very well be his last. Even though there was an announcement of his retirement in 2013, it was not long afterward that the anime genius decided to jump back onto the scene. According to Anime News Network, the translated notice affirmed that this movie contract will last three years beginning October 1st, 2017. However, due to Miyazaki’s current age, it will soon be time to lay down the reigns. After all, by the time this project debuts, he will be approaching 80 years.

It isn’t clear if this is being done willingly since his dedication to the craft is more than apparent, especially seen in the Owaranai Hito: Miyazaki Hayao (“Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki”) documentary special. Regardless, it will be a truly sad day when his hands will no longer be at the forefront of the films. Of course, Studio Ghibli will continue on.

Currently, a prospective date for this upcoming film is estimated to be sometime in 2019, but it seems more likely to see it premiere sometime later than that. Other than that, information regarding plot and title have not been revealed yet. Producer Toshio Suzuki did divulge that 20 minutes of storyboard have already been drawn. Furthermore, the company is actively hiring animators and background artists and it is not exclusive to Japan. It must be said that an adequate understanding of the Japanese language is needed in order to work for Studio Ghibli.

While this is undoubtedly bittersweet news, the anticipation of another Miyazaki creation is just beyond the horizon! What are your thoughts on his retirement?
