Grand Theft Auto 6 Reportedly 60 To 70 Percent Complete
It’s been years since Grand Theft Auto 5 released. In fact, it’s been over six! Though there have been whispers of the progress of its sequel, Rockstar has remained silent on any updates. However, a recent report suggested that Grand Theft Auto 6 is still in early stages of development but fans aren’t buying it.
According to Kotaku, the game is “still early in development” as the team lays out the groundwork of a better working model for its developers and personnel in order to “mitigate stress and crunch.” However, the Grand Theft Auto community took to the forums to discuss the likelihood of Schreier’s claims and, quite frankly, some aren’t buying it:
I’m not gonna doubt Jason, I’m sure he has contacts, knows some people from the industry which includes Rockstar, he’s the type of guy who vouch for improving the health and conditions of developers, always taking the developer side before the publisher, it makes sense that he would be in contact with multiple sources, but even if we take all of the info he shared into account, it doesn’t turn him into a god figure who can’t commit mistakes. Him saying the next title is still in early stages of development is most likely a mistake, I’m positive it already passed early stages of development, there’s no way it’s still stuck on that stage. It’s 60% to 70% done from what I have heard.”
GTA insiders such as Yan2295 and Tez2 is similarly aligned and believe Kotaku may have misinterpreted the actual phase that Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently in. He stated that it’s simply not possible that the game is only within early stages of development.

Take note that RDR2 took approximately 8 or 7 years worth of development, main production started right after RDR1 release & recording sessions began in 2013
Expect the same with the next title, unless it’s “early” as in we are nowhere near release which is more believable.— Tez2 (@TezFunz2) April 16, 2020
Of course, this is all speculative debate and no one is certain where these insider sources are from or the level of legitimacy. Despite Tez2 and Yan225’s reputation within the GTA community, an official statement has not been released by Rockstar yet. Seeing as whispers are circulating around Grand Theft Auto 6 once again, it seems likely we’ll be hearing more in the coming months. With COVID-19 running rampant, it may not happen until later this year.
It’s possible that Rockstar wants to keep GTA 6’s progress a surprise until they’re ready to unveil their years of work. After all, Rockstar isn’t a small studio by any means and likely have the bandwidth to create more than one game at a given time. We’ll just have to wait and see!
