Switch Exclusive RPG “Golf Story” is a Cross Between Earthbound and Caddyshack

Golf Story

While gamers wait for the summer’s anticipated first party Switch titles, such as Arms and Splatoon 2, indie developers will have the benefit of having their smaller projects stand out in the system’s relatively small library of games. Games such as Shantae: Half Genie Hero are reaping the benefit of having less competition and thus lower risk of financial failure from having the game on the Switch. Also, the quirky history of Nintendo console libraries have made more unique games feel welcome on the system. The new indie RPG Golf Story now announced for a summer release date looks to take advantage of these benefits.

Independent studio Sidebar Games has revealed details about this charming game on the website for Golf Story. The game will have players follow a young golfer as they take one final shot at their dream of glory, which will involve both playing the classic sport and interacting with the world off of the green course. There will be 8 unique environments to explore and play in, each with their own unique courses, towns, and people to interact with. The game will also use classic RPG mechanics such as equipment purchasing and puzzle solving.

The game’s adorable art style is reminiscent of classic 16-bit era RPGs such as Earthbound or Harvest Moon, and the inclusion of golfing mechanics and culture will make Caddyshack and Happy Gilmore fans happy. No solid release date was given, but Switch owners will be able to play it later this summer. What do you guys think? Are you excited for this new Golf Story game? Let us know in the comments below!
