Four Planned Avatar Sequels Begin Production, New Release Dates Announced
Until very recently, James Cameron’s fabled Avatar sequels have solely existed as the rumored stuff of legend, only remaining within the mind of the films’ director. The proposed four-film follow-ups were considered by most to be pure vaporware, especially as time moved further and further away from the original film’s release year of 2009. As one might probably guess by now, that scenario is far from the case. Cameron recently made an announcement via Facebook that production has indeed begun on the long-hyped Avatar sequels, with the upcoming films receiving updated release dates as well.
All four films are scheduled to come out within a five year span, the first of which will hit theaters on December 18th, 2020. The next movie in the series will arrive the following year on December 17, 2021, with Avatar 4 & 5 pending release after a three-year hiatus. This is probably for the best as general audiences could theoretically get overwhelmed if the Avatar sequels release too frequently. The remaining two films will officially land on December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025. Five years of Avatar… Get ready, everyone!
Back in 2009, there was no bigger movie than the special effects extravaganza Avatar, having earned a whopping 2 billion dollars in its worldwide box office run. The film showed off breathtaking visuals and innovated its own 3D technology that continues to make an impact on the entertainment industry to this day. Now that four more of these massive movies are on their way, only time will tell if any of them can live up to their golden older brother.
