James Cameron’s Avatar Sequel May Have a Release Date

In 2009, Writer and Director James Cameron took us on a journey to the distant planet of Pandora in the epic sci-fi movie Avatar. In April of 2016, Cameron announced that four sequels are planned to follow the highest theatrical grossing movie of all time. He even went as far as claiming that the first of the sequels would be released Christmas 2018.

According to Deadline, 20th Century Fox updated their theatrical release calendar and stealthily added an unnamed movie from James Cameron’s production company, Lightstorm Entertainment  for December18, 2018. This isn’t an officially announced release date for the movie, but Cameron did say that he was shooting for that time frame.

In April, James Cameron spoke of the upcoming movies at CinemaCon:

“We’re making four epic [Avatar] films that stand alone but together form a saga. I’ve been working with the top four screenwriters and designers in the world to design the world of Avatar going forward. The environments, new cultures — whatever it takes to bring it to life. From what I’m seeing of the art on the wall … in pure imagination is just beyond the first film. I’m speechless.”

The official Avatar website reports that Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana, and Stephen Lang have all signed on for the upcoming sequels. The original film pulled in $760,507,625 in US box offices and a whopping $2,783,918,982 worldwide, making the science fiction adventure movie the highest grossing theatrical release of all time. In second place is another James Cameron film, Titanic.

As of right now, the release date for Avatar 2 is purely speculation, bust rest assured that we here at DFTG will keep you updated as more news develops. In the meantime (and for nostalgia sake), go ahead and check out the trailer for the first trip to Pandora below:
