Former Mass Effect Director Working On ‘New Sci-Fi Universe’
After departing Mass Effect developer BioWare on the heels of a historic tenure, Casey Hudson further surprised the industry by opening an all-new studio dubbed Humanoid Studios. In the several months since its christening, Humanoid has been underway on a mysterious first project, sending immense shockwaves of speculation into the abyss of the internet. Though the mystery continues, it appears the studio is still keeping its BioWare ties close with the creation of an “all-new science-fiction universe.”
This exciting revelation comes from the newly-updated Humanoid Studios website, which professes inklings of the indie collective’s first in-development IP. As per the site, the new project is said to be a “multi-platform AAA game” focusing on “character-driven narrative” and takes place “in an all-new science-fiction universe.” Highlighting these details, the site is also sprawled with several interesting pieces of futuristic concept art, which can be viewed below.
In addition to these new project details, the Humanoid website also outlines its ambitions as a studio, which places “creative freedom and independence” at the forefront. Such focuses include building properly engaging “worlds, characters, and storytelling,” innovating “magical” tools and technologies, and maintaining a “safe and supportive” work environment. With previous experience heading the original Mass Effect games, Casey Hudson cited “new worlds of adventure” as “the heart” of what Humanoid Studios is all about.
“By combining excellence in the arts with innovative technologies, videogames have the extraordinary power to transport you to new worlds of adventure. That’s what first inspired me to make games, and it’s at the heart of what we do at Humanoid Studios.”
As of now, details regarding this new Humanoid IP are currently unknown and could be for a long while. Though several pieces of concept art are available, the studio’s website is shown to be filling numerous job positions related to game development, suggesting a reveal is not likely coming soon. While not at BioWare anymore, the idea of a Mass Effect co-creator heading a new sci-fi universe is undeniably intriguing and this project will definitely have legions of eyes locked onto whatever it does next.
