Final Fantasy XIV Will Feature A ‘New Story’ Post-Endwalker Expansion
Final Fantasy XIV game director Naoki Yoshida has said in the past that the game’s overarching story – the Tale of Gods Light and Dark – is a finite one, with the story now officially coming to close in the newly announced Endwalker expansion. His wording has remained vague on what that could mean for the future of the popular MMORPG, and given his role as the producer for Final Fantasy XVI, the fate of his magnum opus was thrown into question. Thankfully it appears that we can all breathe a sigh of relief, as Yoshi-P has confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV will embark on a brand new story following the conclusion of Endwalker.
During tonight’s special announcement showcase, Yoshi-P addressed concerns that he would be leaving Final Fantasy XIV in someone else’s hands to pursue other interests, such as Final Fantasy XVI. The game director finally put an end to those concerns by confirming that he has no intention whatsoever of “leaving the project,” and that both Final Fantasy XIV and his leadership role will continue for “many many many years” to come. “I want to assure everyone that I’m not going anywhere, I’m not leaving the project,” Yoshi-P’s translator relayed. “I look at Final Fantasy XIV as my life’s work, or at least until the President tells me to stop. ”
6.0 will be ending the story, but from 6.1 on we have an even greater story, and I personally feel that I’m probably going to end up being with Final Fantasy XIV for my whole life.”
Yoshi-P goes on to say that if he ever did feel the need to leave the project, he would let us all know ahead of time. “People are telling me that I should continue with this even after I die,” Yoshi-P said, with his translator’s eyes lighting up to the idea of possibly using necromancy to keep everything running. Necromancy? Hmmmmm.
Final Fantasy XIV is now available for PC and PS4, and will be releasing for PS5 at some point likely this year. The game’s Endwalker expansion will be releasing in Fall 2021.
