Final Fantasy IX Is Getting An Animated TV Series For 8 To 13-Year-Olds

Final Fantasy IX is undoubtedly one of Square Enix’s most beloved entries in the long running RPG series, certainly enough to have earned its place on yours truly’s author page for the past few years. As such, it comes to little surprise that an animated TV series is in development based on the game, though it will apparently be targeted towards children 8 to 13-years-old.

As reported by Kidscreen and since confirmed by Square Enix’s Sunil Godhania, French animation and production company Cyber Group Studios has partnered with the Japanese publisher to adapt Final Fantasy IX as an animated series for the small screen. While also producing the show, Cyber Group will oversee worldwide distribution, licensing, and merchandise. “The games have a strong co-viewing potential,” Cyber Group’s Pierre Sissmann said to Kidscreen.

For those who do know Final Fantasy IX , this will be an [introduction]. And for the many who don’t, this will immerse them in a universe they’ll love.”

As one would expect, there are already concerns about the animated TV series being adapted with 8 to 13-year-olds in mind. After all, the game isn’t just about playing with Bobby Corwin and eating delicious tasties with Quina. Final Fantasy IX deals with some pretty heavy subjects like death, sorrow, overcoming tremendous loss, existentialism, and genocide, to name a few. Having younger characters like Vivi and Eiko in the series will undoubtedly lend itself to making the series more palatable for children, though Cyber Group will still need to tread lightly in order to produce a Final Fantasy IX adaptation that older fans can enjoy whilst not overwhelming the targeted age group.
