DOOM Eternal: id Software Explains Why It’s Not Called DOOM 2
Now that fans have feasted their eyes upon the glorious action that is to come in DOOM Eternal, it’s time to play the waiting game. With no release date to speak of, we’ll have to wait on the edge of our seats to hear any word of when we can get out hands on the highly-anticipated sequel to 2016’s DOOM. That said, many have been wondering why it’s not called DOOM 2, and id Software has provided a reason.
During a recent interview, id Software executive producer Marty Stratton and creative director Hugo Martin discussed the reasoning behind the DOOM Eternal name. The purpose behind avoiding DOOM 2 comes from the first entry from two years ago. “You hear us say it all the time, we call it Doom 2016, and the internet has called it Doom 2016,” Stratton said.
“We go back and forth on whether it was a mistake to call it Doom,” Stratton continued. “I still don’t think it was a mistake, because we really were kind of drawing a new line in the sand.” Their definitely sticking to their guns, and sticking with that, they said, “coming out and saying ‘we’re going to do Doom 2,’ we would have ‘Doom 2: Year of Release Date.”
Martin chimed in, expressing concerns for the searchability of DOOM 2. He stated that looking for the game online would be “a giant pain in the butt, because you get all this [other] stuff.” He continued, saying that they got together with their marketing team to develop a name “that had meaning and spoke to what we were doing with lore and how we want people to feel about the game. And Doom Eternal was something that just felt right.” Well, if that isn’t good enough of a reason, I don’t know what is.
However, when it comes to DOOM Eternal, wanting to avoid “DOOM 2: 2019 (possibly)” and potential search issues were not their only reasons behind the name. It turns out that Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Trilogy’ played a part when deciding what to name the sequel. You can read more about that right here.
DOOM Eternal doesn’t have a release date, but it will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One. Keep it tuned to Don’t Feed the Gamers as this story develops, and for other gaming goodness going on right now, check out the following:
