Doctor Who’s 13th Doctor Revealed – Jodie Whittaker Takes up the Mantle of ‘The Doctor’ (VIDEO)
After many long months of anticipation and speculation, the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) has finally revealed the identity of the 13th Doctor, choosing the end of Wimbledon as the platform on which to announce 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi’s replacement. The actor announced to be taking over for Capaldi following this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special is none other than Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker. The reveal comes in the form of a video BBC released on their Twitter, which features a hooded figure that is revealed to be the 13th Doctor and a new key for the Tardis materializing in her hand.

The new Time Lord or Time Lady, if you will, has been keeping her upcoming role a secret for some time now, referring to her upcoming role as ‘The Clooney”‘ in order to avoid suspicion. Whittaker elaborated on the why behind their choice in code-name in a statement: “It was The Clooney because to me and my husband, George is an iconic guy. And we thought: ‘what’s a really famous iconic name?’ It was just fitting.” It also helps that George Clooney played a doctor back on ER.
Doctor Who fans are already extremely divided on BBC’s decision to cast the very first woman to play as The Doctor who has, throughout all of his regenerations, been male. Up until a day ago, Jodie Whittaker’s name wasn’t anywhere near the shortlist of actors presumed to have the highest chance of taking over for Capaldi. Whittaker had this to say to fans regarding the Doctor’s upcoming transition from male to female:
I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender because this is a really exciting time and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.”
Fans can expect to see Jodie Whittaker make her first onscreen appearance as the Doctor during the Doctor Who Christmas special, which will feature three different iterations of the main character including Peter Capaldi pre-regeneration, Whittaker post-regeneration, and special guest actor David Bradley as the very first Doctor.
