Disney Animation Head John Lasseter Leaves Pixar After Allegations Of Sexual Misconduct

The atmosphere in the entertainment industry is tense as allegations of sexual misconduct reach every level. More and more people are finding the courage to call out the behavior of those with power in the industry, causing many actors, producers, and others to step down and publicly apologize. The latest allegations to emerge are leveled at the head of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, John Lasseter.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story, reporting that John Lasseter would be taking a leave of absence for six months to deal with personal “missteps”. The story comes from a memo obtained internally that states Lasseter has had some pretty painful conversations recently. According to reports, groping and kissing employees at Disney and Pixar are some of Mr. Lassater’s “missteps”.

I’ve recently had a number of difficult conversations that have been very painful for me. It’s never easy to face your missteps, but it’s the only way to learn from them. As a result, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the leader I am today compared to the mentor, advocate and champion I want to be. It’s been brought to my attention that I have made some of you feel disrespected or uncomfortable. That was never my intent. Collectively, you mean the world to me, and I deeply apologize if I have let you down. I especially want to apologize to anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of an unwanted hug or any other gesture they felt crossed the line in any way, shape, or form. No matter how benign my intent, everyone has the right to set their own boundaries and have them respected.”

While the memo paints a story of an overly affectionate boss being misunderstood, the allegations note that John Lasseter grabbed, kissed, and made comments about the physical features of employees at Pixar and Disney. While the Director of Toy Story and overseer of all Walt Disney Animation Studio projects may be a powerful figure in the Animation industry, his conduct has put him in a difficult position for the company and he may find his leave of absence is permanent should things get too heated.
