Discord Announces Plans to Bring Video Chat and Screen Sharing to Their Platform Soon
In recent years, Discord has gained popularity and momentum as a means for gamers to chat as they play their favorite games. The service has proven more than reliable, rivaling other platforms as a communication tool. Now the company has announced that they’re preparing to launch video and screen sharing capabilities, putting them in direct opposition of Skype.
For those who don’t know, Discord is a free and secure communications platform that players can use to hang with their friends via voice and text chat. Multiple channels for various games can be made, making it easier for groups to bounce between channels if they’re not feeling the game they’re currently playing. Whether gaming on PC, Console, or running tabletop, Discord has something for everyone. The addition of video chat and screen sharing has been a feature fans have been requesting for a long time now.

These coming features for Discord have been cited as the reason most players haven’t yet deviated from other platforms like Skype and TeamSpeak. The company hasn’t been shy about their competitive nature, mentioning both companies on their twitter and comparing the all three services on their Features section. If the video and screen sharing features perform well, this could mean a mass exodus from other platforms, but that remains as speculation.
As of yet, there is no release date for the new features Discord is planning to launch. It is the usual policy of the company not to release the dates as they prefer to deliver a complete product to their users and that can take time. However the company has said that the features would be coming “HellaSoon”, so keep an eye out. In the mean time, check out DFTG’s Discord to start gaming with the community!
Will the addition of video and screen sharing features for Discord mean the end of Skype and TeamSpeak, or will these platforms still survive on what they have to offer?
